Lars Porsenna, Etruscan king of Chiusi, according to Latin tradition obtained the capitulation of Rome by imposing a treaty whereby the Romans were forbidden to use iron. There are no certain dates for his reign, but Roman tradition places him around the end of the 6th century BC.
The artist depicts him as an anti-hero, one who with strength and courage manages to challenge, and defeat, the established power.
