Lars Porsenna, was an Etruscan king ruling the city of Clusium (Chiusi).
He is best known for his invasion of Rome at the end of the 6th century BC, a central event in Roman mythology.
Porsenna’s motives for invading Rome are not entirely clear. Some sources claim that he was motivated by revenge, as the Roman king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus had been exiled from Rome and sought Porsenna’s help to regain his throne. According to others, Porsenna was simply trying to expand his territory and influence.
The artist Carlo Zoli pays homage to the figure of Personna as emblematic for the Region of Tuscany and represents him as an anti-hero, one who with strength and courage manages to challenge, and defeat, established power.
